Morné Visagie is a South African artist whose work is rooted in his childhood on Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was once imprisoned. His practice looks at water as a site of exile and survival, from the surrounding sea to more intimate spaces like swimming pools, bathhouses, and locker rooms, shaped by the experience of growing up queer in silence. These spaces echo the island’s legacy of isolation, which continues to inform his broader exploration of displacement and migration.
